The work is concerned with the male form, particularly my position as a white man. Although I consider whiteness as a social construct I am also aware of my social image. An image of western and gender dominance. Failing masculinity - the work investigates how the image of masculinity fails, or the man fails to uphold the image. The man fails to function as an image of great strength and success, we witness his internal terror as he stares into the mirror. A failed businessman, a failed warrior, a failed nurse. As a nurse he is undermined by the superiority of a Doctor, as a nurse a job associated with being feminine, he fails to uphold and maintain. The work attempts to undermine the cultural construction of masculinity and whiteness through revealing its unattainability through the Live body. The work discusses the failures/ absurdity of performing an image.
The audience witnesses a dystopic conflict, where the image and person do not align causing trauma, the man innately aware as he uses mirrors and shiny objects to view himself in the world, however, his trauma goes untreated, it's normalised, its how he fits in. The man sat next to him, declared his views, he was declared Mad by the Doctor.
I am an English artist currently based in London UK. Having completed a BA in Fine Art Hons at University Worcester in 2017 I have since studied my MA in Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art. My practice mainly focuses on the body and sculptural structures which represent power and control, an attempt to expose absurdity within cultural hegemony and white masculinity. My practice involves many different elements including Film, Performance, Painting, Printmaking, Costume Design and Creative Writing.
