The tower block is in the mind of Laing. Laing’s downward spiral of his own mind and consciousness deteriorates from the moment he sees a scan which shows a brain tumor, from that moment the characters within the tower block (a self-contained living environment) begins to destroy themselves and those around them (parts of his mind) it continues to the point of depravity and total absurdity ending where the film began ‘later, as he sat on his balcony eating the dog, DR Robert Laing reflected on the unusual events that had taken place within this huge apartment building during the previous three months.’ J. G. Ballard. Ontologically it could be argued that Laing has or had actually institutionalized himself into this self-contained world within his head due to the emotional turmoil. From the moment that Laing discovered the tumor he never leaves the apartment block or its grounds. Munrow dies by suicide. This was reprehensive of Laing giving up a part of him that was the arrogant and motive (get up and go) dyeing within his being. He let go and becomes more animal, his reality changes and he becomes more emotive. His more deviant and destructive emotions fight for his persona.
